The Counseling Department of Xavier College Prep provides counseling services for academic, social, and personal issues or concerns. The role of the counselor is to facilitate the mission of a Jesuit High School, namely, to encourage students to mature, grow, and develop within the framework of the five attributes of the Grad at Graduation. By graduation it is expected that each Xavier student will be well on his/her way to becoming intellectually competent, loving, open to growth, committed to doing justice, religious and ultimately become “men and women for others”.
Each semester students will have the opportunity to meet with the counselor individually as well as in a group setting to discuss educational plans, goals, grades, and possible college majors or careers. Students are provided a special one-on-one relationship with the counselor and are free to discuss issues relating to classroom, family, and peer issues. All conversations are confidential unless a student is in danger or causing harm to self or others. Group counseling will also be available to assist students in coping strategies and life skills when dealing with difficult relationships, divorce, depression, alcohol, drugs, or the loss of a friend or family member.
College guidance and information regarding the preparation, admission process, testing, scholarship, and financial aid will be given students and parents in individual meetings, workshops, and college visitations. Students will be encouraged to do individual college searches, visit campuses, to attend local College Fairs as well as meet with college admission representatives who visit the Xavier campus throughout the school year. While there is no perfect college or university, it is hoped that students will select a college that fits their individual needs for a major, location, size, and climate where they will be comfortable, academically challenged, and successful.
In an effort to stay current in the competitive college admission process, Xavier Prep is a member of The National Association of College Admission Counselors, The College Board, The Jesuit High School College Counselors Association and other professional and educational organizations related to the college admission process. The school is represented at regional and national meetings of these organizations.
